My initial thoughts upon enrolling in this class were that I had it all figured out. I have an extensive resume and have never not been hired after an interview. However, mid-semester, I have come to realize that I don’t know everything there is about work search, interviewing, or even working.

The most important lesson I have learned in this class to day is one that our guest speaker Ebe Randeree taught me: Self-branding.  Sure, I have social media to connect with my friends and family and post pictures from the weekend. But, Ebe Randeree taught us that it was crucial to also brand yourself to potential employers. Since his visit, I have created a Twitter, Linkedin, and About.Me sites catered to the eyes of employers. For instance, I now have a Twitter which I only follow news about the Public Relations and Hospitality industry, my major and minor. Information about those two fields of interest is pertinent to what I am going to be dealing with once I graduate. I retweet and reply to some of the news content in order to generate some information on my page, which reveals my interest in the area.

Many of the speakers have also emphasized the importance of networking in order to land a job. Networking has always been a part of my life and this course has reinforced the importance of getting in touch with other people. It is about who you know and taking advantage of this concept is crucial in the success of finding a career centered job.

Also, Bob Allen from i.d.e.a.s. was extremely influential in my opinion. His whole concept of being a happy person and having a good attitude will take you further in your career than you think really made an impact on how I feel about personal attitudes at work. He admitted that he would fire a hard working person with a negative attitude before firing a hardly working person with a positive attitude. I, personally, have experienced negative attitudes in the work place and definitely believe that bad attitudes will bring everyone down. For my future job I will make sure to leave anything that’s bothering me in my personal life outside of work.

Overall, this class has taught me what I need to do in order to be happy and fulfilled with my future job. I have already began branding myself, networking, and realizing the important of a positive attitude.
